The CO2-2-H2 process is a novel combination of several tried and tested technologies from the areas of Clean Coal, Underground Gas Storage, Flares to Value, CCS and Blue Hydrogen. Unfortunately, some operators have designed blue hydrogen projects with very low capture rates, which led some researchers to claim that "blue hydrogen is dirtier than coal". We distance ourselves from this negative rhetoric by guaranteeing that our golden hydrogen is carbon-negative and thereby greener than green.
Existing Blue Hydrogen projects typically have a carbon intensity of 1-6 mtCO2equiv./mtH2 The US Inflation Reduction Act defines low carbon Hydrogen as being below 4 mtCO2equiv./mtH2 and grants a tax credit of 3 $/kg for such Hydrogen.
It is very difficult and expensive to get below 1 mtCO2equiv./mtH2 with blue hydrogen technology and zero can only be achieved asymptotically. We therefore make a step-change and target for less than -1 mtCO2/mt H2 with the CO2-2-H2 process by injecting extra CO2 from external sources. This guarantees that Golden Hydrogen is carbon-negative and can be marketed as “golden” or “greener than green” hydrogen.
CO2-2-H2 is a process that generates Golden Hydrogen by injecting CO2 into a producing conventional gas reservoir. The CO2 displaces the hydrocarbon gas via producing wells to a closed-loop SMR plant which splits the raw gas into hydrogen, gas liquids, inert gas and CO2. The CO2 is re-injected into the reservoir in a closed-loop system, ie. with the highest reasonable capture efficiency and avoiding fugitive methane emissions.
